Kevin Paulsen

A sense of familiarity is the first impression one has upon approaching one of Kevin Paulsen’s large folk paintings. His landscapes, theorem inspired still-lifes and naively styled flowers draw heavily on historic imagery and processes.

On closer inspection the contemporary painter emerges. Kevin’s rich surfaces are covered with cracks, intimate marks, words, figures and on occasion a bit of cardboard, metal and upholstery tacks, revealing his fascination with textures and colors. Old broken walls, rusted metal and music are among the things that inspire his work.

An early interest in art kindled by his great grandmother and the influence of a high school art teacher were instrumental in Kevin’s decision to pursue painting as a profession. Following studies at the Kansas City Art Institute and relocating to Nantucket, Kevin honed his skills as a muralist. While working on commissions for homes and restaurants he began showing paintings in local galleries.

Critical acclaim led to work and galley representation in New York prompting him to move again. He currently resides in New York’s Hudson Valley where he shares his life, studio, two poodles and a cat with his long-time partner, Bonnie. Kevin is the proud father of two sons, Maxwell and Geddes.
