In Studio with Silvia Vassileva

Silvia Vassileva’s light-filled studio is an easy commute from her kitchen, yet worlds apart from anything to do with everyday living. Vibrantly painted images abound, and Silvia’s seemingly limitless energy radiates throughout the room. It is here, to the melodies of Mozart and Vivaldi, that this prolific artist transforms blank canvases into vivid still lifes, street scenes, interiors and landscapes. Music plays an important role in her work, both as subject matter and inspiration, and her cherished piano holds a place of honor in the studio.
Silvia is justifiably proud of her home studio, which she designed herself. She describes it as contemporary, minimalist and bright with large windows which offer unobstructed views of her picturesque gardens. “It is so inspiring. Whenever I paint I feel like a twenty-year-old art student in my small Sofia attic with skylights.”
Silvia grew up in Bulgaria and, after studying with the beloved art teacher she considers to be her mentor, received a classical art education at the Academy of Fine Art. She moved to Japan with her husband before settling in California. During the course of her education and travels, Silvia has mastered six languages, learning English and Japanese at the same time!

A busy wife and mother, Silvia paints every day. “I usually start around 9:30 am,” says Silvia, “when the light is perfect and the family is off to work and school.” She paints throughout the day until it is time to cross the threshold from studio and work to home and family.
